Lila’s deletions can be associated with heart issues so we go to the cardiologist annually. She also needed some bloodwork done and the lab at Hopkins is a million times better than anywhere else at pediatric blood draws.
Last year, despite her general feelings of … constant screaming … at doctor’s visits, she did great at the cardiologist. She laid still for the entire echo and just watched Baby Shark on the iPad.
This year, we had no such luck. We got there and she immediately started to get upset, and was so worked up by the time they took us back that they decided to skip the echo entirely. If she needs anything that requires anesthesia anytime soon, we will have them do an echo then, but otherwise we are hoping for a better visit in 18 months. One positive outcome is we got a recent weight and blood pressure which were both good - she’s back up to the 3rd %ile for weight!
On the one hand, I don’t want her to learn that screaming gets her out of stuff, and on the other hand, you actually cannot do an echo on a baby that won’t stay still, so it was really just not gonna happen. To make sure the visit was still traumatic, we went for the blood draw afterwards. We had to wait for around twenty minutes while she cried and the poor lab techs had to transcribe all of our orders because of some issue with the system. The good news is we got the results back right away and all of her values are pretty within range, so that’s good.
We got donuts afterwards. I’m working hard to build a positive association with doctor’s visits.
Then we picked up Molly and went to the library, where Lila proceeded to run around, scream, and throw a fit about having to leave before every single person in the library read her the new sesame street book she was checking out.
The plan was for that to be the last specialist appointment until her GI follow up, but she developed another ear infection this week, and we can see the tube sitting in her ear, stuck in wax. Our pediatrician was unable to get it out and when I reached out to the ENT, we all remembered that we are due for a follow up. So she goes to that next week. Tuesday’s doctor’s appointment involved nonstop crying as well, but I did find the nearest Dunkin Donuts with curbside pickups. I did unlock the health page on her talker and she found the tissue button. Then today I turned around for five minutes to eat some toast and this happened.
